Work included the siting of the 13,500-SF Natural Grocers facility on a historically drainage-plagued ¼-acre site in downtown Payson, Arizona.
Preserving Existing Vegetation and Wetlands
The existing site had severe site restrictions due to the need to preserve the native vegetation, including a stand of mature Douglas Fir. The project also required locating necessary retention basins for the 60-car parking facility. The Douglas Fir required special flagstone retaining walls to protect their root canopy and native plantings were incorporated into the retention areas.
Westwood was responsible for directing the team of landscape designers in the overall site evaluation, development of a tree preservation plan, design of alternative landscape concepts, and preparation of final construction documents. Westwood worked with the planning department staff at the Town of Payson to develop the landscape preservation plan and final landscape and site design, which included the water harvesting in the xeriscape retention areas and buffered landscape parking and maximization of the parking requirements.
