Civil Staff Engineer


Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a Site Design Staff Engineer to join our team. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients. In this role, you will perform activities related to the site design of utility-scale solar projects. This work involves aiding in the design of civil infrastructure such as access roads and work pads. Along with the civil design, other work activities include permitting support and occasional field work. We are seeking an Engineer who shares our passion for high-quality production, client commitment, and a fast-paced work environment. This position will serve as a member of an integrated design team and be responsible for compiling civil design plan sets alongside other disciplines to meet project schedules and budgets, where clear and concise written and verbal communication is imperative. Role Description:

  • Serve as a design team member supporting permitting, design, and construction of renewable energy projects.
  • Use sound engineering judgment and adhere to ethical standards when evaluating, selecting, and applying standard technical procedures to complete project tasks.
  • Gain foundational knowledge and develop engineering skills through mentored experiences.
  • Coordinate with design team members to meet project milestones, contract requirements, and client expectations.
  • Collaborate with design team members to uphold company standards and consistency.

Role Responsibilities:

1) Technical Expertise
Conduct basic design tasks to prepare sections of plans, specifications, and other project documents. These tasks may include:

  • Researching, evaluating, and applying data 
  • Preparing detailed engineering calculations 
  • Preparing specifications and details 
  • Preparing detailed construction drawings 
  • Designing and producing deliverables using AutoCAD Civil 3D software 

Support various project tasks, such as:

  • Conducting research and field assessments 
  • Preparing permit applications 
  • Writing technical reports 
  • Creating technical presentations and exhibits 
  • Preparing quantity take-offs and cost estimates 
  • Providing construction support (e.g., responding to RFIs, performing field inspections) 
  • Collaborate with Project Engineers and Lead Engineers to determine necessary adjustments to methods for non-routine aspects of assignments.


2) Quality
Provide accurate design deliverables that closely meet contract requirements by:

  • Maintaining awareness of and complying with Westwood quality, design, and CAD standards 
  • Performing quality reviews of your work products for accuracy 

Coordinate with design team members to create a well-coordinated and constructible design. Coordination efforts include:

  • Attending internal coordination meetings 
  • Collaborating closely with internal teams across multiple service groups 
  • Keeping the Lead Engineer informed of work status, workload, issues, and progress related to work assignments 

3) Business Development Support

  • Provide accurate design deliverables that closely meet contract requirements.
  • Respond to client requests promptly.
  • Treat all stakeholders professionally and with respect.

Contacts / Direction:

  • Assigned design tasks by a Project Engineer or Lead Engineer.
  • Receive frequent guidance on overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
  • Receive supervision and guidance on unusual conditions and developments.
  • Independently manage and prioritize assigned tasks and projects.
  • Maintain close collaboration with lead engineers, project engineers, staff engineers, and technicians to complete designs and adhere to deadlines, project scope, and budget.
  • Complete work that undergoes thorough review to ensure the application of sound professional judgment.
  • Gain mentored experience from a licensed engineer in your area of expertise.

The Substation P&C Engineer serves as an engineer on electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. He/she will apply NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards in the engineering design and will also independently produce: one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, potential and current schematics, control schematics, alarm schematics, protection and control specifications, and I/O mapping. He/she should be familiar with protection scheme functionality. The ability to develop relay settings and associated points mapping is not required but preferred. He/she will also work with other internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met.
