The successful job applicant will be part of a dynamic geotechnical engineering team and will assist senior geotechnical staff with project work involving various aspects of geotechnical engineering related to renewable energy and other power-related projects. Work elements may involve some or all the following: geotechnical investigation field work and in-situ testing, laboratory testing coordination, geotechnical analysis and design, report preparation, and construction monitoring/observation. This position offers flexible pathways—join us as a summer intern or commit to a full co-op experience by taking a semester off to work full-time at Westwood. Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in geotechnical site investigations, assignment and assessment of geotechnical laboratory tests, preparation of investigation reports, and application of site data to analyses and design.
  • Interpret and analyze geotechnical data to establish type, classification and engineering characteristics of materials. Complete or assist with geotechnical engineering analyses including, but not limited to, seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, rotational stiffness, liquefaction, and settlement analyses.
  • Keep management advised of work status, workload, problems and progress as related to work assignments.
  • Participate in preparation of proposals, bid documents and capital cost estimates, construction drawings and design reports.

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a GIS SPECIALIST / FIELD TECHNICIAN to join our Geotechnical Engineering team in our MINNEAPOLIS, MN, MADISON, WI, or DENVER, CO offices. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our renewable energy clients.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain geospatial data on desktop and mobile applications. Ensure data meets appropriate data accuracy and content standards for quality assurance and quality control.
  • Create customized client-facing Operations Dashboards and configurable web applications to allow for real-time project monitoring.
  • Participate in field assignments such as geotechnical investigations, pile load testing, culvert inventories, road condition studies, and site visits. Expect to be travelling on field assignments on average up to 50% of the time (i.e., 1-2 weeks per month). Field assignments are approximately 1 to 2 weeks in length. Food and lodging allowances will be provided.
  • Perform field data entry and post-processing when in the office to support analysis and report development.
  • Lead fieldwork preparation, including preparing safety plans and field maps, coordinating utility clearances, planning travel, and coordinating project requirements with subcontractors and client representatives.
  • Clearly communicate with management regarding project status, workload, problems and progress as related to work assignments.
  • Utilize advanced GPS equipment to locate and map objects and utilities in the field.
  • Provide independent data interpretation while effectively maintaining data documentation.
  • Create and modify GIS datasets; manage and maintain legacy GIS datasets; develop and implement GIS-based analyses supporting civil engineering, electrical engineering, and survey projects.
  • Produce technically skilled and detailed solutions to include preparing clear, complete, and accurate representations of spatial data using hardcopy and/or electronic media.
  • Core responsibility includes processing data and graphics requests from project team members and anticipating information needs and presentation format as part of engineering and survey workflows.
  • You will work on energy projects, such as transmission, solar and wind, and land projects, such as residential and commercial development, to compile available information for project proposals.

  • Create, edit, and modify CAD drawings (details and plan sets) for engineering projects.

The Manager of Dynamic Studies leads the execution and technical oversight of power system dynamic and EMT studies for renewable generation facilities, including solar, wind, and energy storage projects. This role is responsible for developing and managing a team of engineers performing positive-sequence and electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, ensuring technical excellence, consistency, and timely project delivery. 


Responsibilities:

  • Grow, lead and manage a team of engineers   performing dynamic and EMT studies for renewable energy projects.
  • Provide technical oversight and QA/QC for all   dynamic modeling and EMT analysis deliverables.
  • Develop and validate power system models (in   positive-sequence and EMT software packages) for renewable facilities,   including solar, wind, and energy storage systems.
  • Perform and oversee EMT studies in PSCAD   including, but not limited to, TOV, TRV, transformer energization and   in-rush, and capacitor bank switching studies.
  • Support project developers and owners through   the interconnection process by interconnection modeling (both positive   sequence and EMT) and assisting with completing interconnection applications   for various RTOs (CAISO, NYISO, MISO, ERCOT, etc.).
  • Monitor evolving ISO/RTO modeling requirements   and emerging technical standards impacting inverter-based resources.
