Substation Designer – P&C

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking a collaborative, detail orientated Substation Designer (CAD Technician) to join a growing energy consulting firm. The Substation Designer would work with our growing Substation Engineering Team to prepare schematic and associated wiring diagrams for high voltage utility substations projects and renewable energy interconnections. The position would require the employee to work with engineers and consultants to create these drawings. Westwood has a highly experienced and dynamic team of individuals dedicated to providing high-level professional services to our clients.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Computer aided design and drafting of all engineering products and deliverables.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other drafters to correct discrepancies in drawings and designs.
  • Typical CAD Design is that of functional electrical drawings as shown below.
  • Operations Diagrams
  • Single Line Drawings
  • Three Line Drawings
  • Current and Potential Schematics
  • Protection and Control Schematics
  • Communication Schematics
  • Alarm Schematics
  • Associated Wiring Diagrams (Point to Point Translation)
  • Importation of tables and calculations such as BOMs as well as creating notes to be applied to each drawing.
  • Self-checks all work performed to ensure its accuracy prior to turning it over to the supervisor or designee assigned to review the work.
  • Understand & meet project schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Complete drawings accurately and efficiently.
  • Detailed and quality oriented.
  • Able to handle multiple projects concurrently and maintain flexibility to changes in work assignments as changes occur in projects.
  • Actively assist in the delivery of a complete project. This may include phone or e-mail correspondence, Microsoft Teams communications, attending meetings, and other project documents required for project completion.
  • Provide interdepartmental support as required.

This position will be responsible for designing elements of utility-scale solar energy systems, primarily using AutoCAD. You'll be utilizing AutoCAD to create construction documents and perform quantity takeoffs. Including site layouts, wire/cable routing plans, one lines, details, equipment/wire schedules, etc.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Construction document production support for commercial and utility scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects.
  • Coordinate with design team disciplines including civil engineers, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors
  • Utilize AutoCAD to create construction documents and perform quantity takeoffs. Construction documents will include site layouts, wire/cable routing plans, one lines, details, equipment/wire schedules, etc.
  • Create wiring/cable schedules based takeoffs and sizing input from senior designers/engineers
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of Westwood design/CAD standards

The Substation Principal Engineer serves as a client-facing point of contact engineer on electric substation design projects for high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. He/she will apply NESC, NEC, and other applicable codes and standards in the engineering design and will also independently produce high voltage physical arrangements, plan and elevations views, station grounding analysis, layout, and details, cable trough and conduit plans, AC and DC calculations to determine station service and battery system requirements, preparation of equipment specifications and bill of materials, and preparation of construction documents. He/she will also work with other internal and external project stakeholders to ensure project milestones and expectations of contracted services are met.
