Project Snapshot

The Greenlane Colton EV Charging Hub in Colton, California, is a landmark commercial electric vehicle infrastructure project designed to support the growing shift toward zero-emission freight transportation. Strategically located near major Southern California freight corridors, the site delivers high-capacity charging for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles.

We partnered with Greenlane and Mortenson Construction to provide planning, civil engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical evaluations, and land surveying services to support the development of a scalable, future-ready charging facility. The Greenlane project reflects a shared commitment to advancing sustainable transportation while delivering reliable infrastructure that meets the real-world needs of commercial fleets.

The Opportunity

The project emerged in response to a clear and growing need: commercial fleets transitioning to electric vehicles require charging infrastructure that is fundamentally different from passenger EV stations. Heavy-duty vehicles demand higher power levels, larger vehicle clearances, efficient circulation, and infrastructure capable of scaling as technology evolves.

Greenlane’s vision was to establish a flagship commercial EV charging hub that could serve today’s fleet operators while laying the groundwork for future expansion. For us, the opportunity was to apply multidisciplinary engineering expertise to a complex infrastructure challenge, balancing electrical capacity, site functionality, and constructability.

Our team was selected for our ability to integrate planning, civil, electrical, structural, and surveying services into a cohesive design approach, ensuring that early planning decisions supported both immediate performance and long-term value.

The Vision

As planning progressed, the vision for the Greenlane Colton site extended beyond a single charging location. The project became a model for how commercial EV infrastructure could be designed to support long-term adoption of zero-emission freight technologies.

We worked closely with the Greenlane Colton project team to help translate the vision of a commercial EV site into practical, buildable solutions. Early coordination focused on aligning site layout, electrical infrastructure, and structural requirements to support operational efficiency while allowing flexibility for future upgrades. This collaborative approach ensured the site could adapt as charging technologies, vehicle types, and fleet needs continue to evolve.

Challenges and Solutions

Aside from accounting for future expansion, designing infrastructure for heavy-duty EV charging presents unique challenges, particularly when high electrical demand and large vehicle movements converge on a single site. One of the primary challenges for the Greenlane Colton project was coordinating the electrical systems required to support high-power charging while maintaining safe, efficient site circulation.

Our electrical engineering team worked in close collaboration with civil and structural disciplines to coordinate equipment placement, conduit routing, and foundational requirements. This integrated approach helped minimize conflicts and supported a streamlined construction process.

From a civil engineering perspective, the site required careful planning to accommodate large vehicle maneuvering, durable pavement systems, and effective drainage. Our team addressed grading and circulation design to ensure the site can operate efficiently for commercial fleets while supporting long-term durability.

Land surveying services provided accurate site data that was essential for design development and construction coordination to help infrastructure elements aligned precisely with design intent.

Innovation in Action

Innovation throughout the project was driven by thoughtful coordination and forward-looking design rather than unnecessary complexity. Our experts focused on creating infrastructure systems that work together seamlessly, supporting current charging needs while remaining adaptable to future technologies.

By integrating multiple engineering disciplines early in the design process, the team helped create a site that balances performance, safety, and flexibility. This approach supports efficient operations today while positioning the facility to accommodate future advancements in commercial EV charging.

Services Delivered

We provided a comprehensive set of services to support the successful delivery of the Greenlane Colton EV Charging Hub, including:

The Outcome

The completed first phase of the Greenlane Colton site features:

  • 12 pull-through semi-trailer charging stations
  • 29 bobtail truck charging stations
  • Two electrical yards
  • Battery storage
  • A small travel center
  • Passenger vehicle stalls
  • Shade canopies

Design for the next phase will expand stall count and accommodate an upgrade from 400 kW to Megawatt chargers.

The facility now supports cleaner freight movement, reduces emissions, and provides fleet operators with reliable access to high-capacity charging infrastructure. Our involvement helped deliver a technically sound, future-ready facility that supports both immediate operational needs and long-term industry transformation.

Looking Ahead

The Greenlane Colton project represents a meaningful step forward in the development of scalable commercial EV infrastructure. As similar projects emerge nationwide, the lessons learned through this effort will help inform future charging hubs designed to support sustainable freight and logistics operations.
